How do you build a target account list?
Start from evidence
The filters come from the companies that already bought and stayed: industry, size, stage, the tools they run, the situation that made them buy. Add disqualifiers from the deals you lost. A list built from who ought to want the product produces a long list and a short pipeline.
Rank by fit and timing
Fit says whether a company could become a good customer. Timing says whether now is the moment: a new leader in the relevant role, hiring for the function, a funding round, a public change in strategy. Rank on both. A perfect fit with no reason to act this quarter belongs in a later wave.
Size it to capacity
Work out how many accounts each seller can genuinely research and pursue, and build the list to that number. A list larger than the team can work turns into a database nobody touches, and the accounts that matter get the same thin effort as the rest.
Keep it alive
Agree with sales which accounts are on the list and who owns each. Remove accounts that are disqualified, add new ones as signals appear, and look at results by tier every quarter. The list is a working document, not a one-time project.
