What is an ideal customer profile (ICP), and how do you build one?
What goes in it
Firmographics such as industry, size and stage. The situation that makes the need urgent, which is often more predictive than size. The tools they already use. And disqualifiers: the traits that reliably lead to a lost deal or an unhappy customer. A profile with no disqualifiers is a description of everyone.
How to build it from evidence
Pull closed-won, closed-lost and churned accounts. Look for what the best customers share that the others lack: how they found you, how fast they decided, who signed, what they were replacing. Then talk to a handful of them. The pattern in the data tells you who, and the conversations tell you why.
ICP and buyer persona are different things
The profile describes the company. A persona describes a person inside it. You need the first before the second: there is little value in a precise picture of a job title at a company that was never going to buy.
How to tell whether it is working
It should change behavior. Sales should be able to decline an account because of it. Marketing should be able to name where those companies are found. If every lead still qualifies, the profile is too loose. Revisit it when the evidence changes, which for a growing company is at least once a year.
