What is speed to lead, and how do you improve it?
Why it matters
Interest decays quickly. A buyer who asks for a demo is usually asking two or three vendors, and the first useful reply sets the frame for the rest. Long-standing research on inbound response points the same way: the odds of reaching and qualifying a lead fall steeply within the first hour.
Where the time is lost
Rarely with the rep. It is lost before the rep knows the lead exists. The form lands in a shared inbox. Someone looks up the company by hand. Assignment waits for a manager or a round robin that ignores territory. The rep opens the record and has to research it before writing. Each step is small. Together they cost most of a day.
How to fix it
Enrich the record the moment it is created, so the rep sees company, size and role without searching. Route by rule to a named owner, with a fallback when that person is out. Alert the owner where they already work, with the context attached. Draft the first reply for them to edit. Then measure the median, not the average, because a few slow weekends hide the truth.
What good looks like
For high-intent requests during working hours, a human reply within minutes. Outside them, an immediate acknowledgment that offers a booking link and sets an honest expectation. The goal is not speed for its own sake. It is being the first vendor to say something useful.
