What is a GTM engineer?

Short answer. A GTM engineer is someone who builds the systems a revenue team runs on: enrichment, scoring, routing, outbound and reporting, wired together with code, automation tools and AI models. The role sits between revenue operations and software engineering, and exists because much of modern go-to-market work is now building, not administering.

What the role does

It takes a manual step in the sales motion and turns it into a system. Researching an account becomes an enrichment workflow. Deciding who to call becomes a scoring model with reasons attached. Writing a first message becomes a draft built from a real signal, reviewed by a person. The output is working software inside the tools the team already uses.

How it differs from RevOps

Revenue operations owns definitions, process and the health of the CRM. A GTM engineer builds on top of that foundation. The two depend on each other: automation built on unclear stages or incomplete records multiplies the confusion, and a clean CRM with nothing built on it leaves the manual work in place.

Skills that matter

Comfort with APIs and data, enough code to connect systems, and working knowledge of how language models behave. The less obvious one is commercial judgment: knowing which step is worth automating, and which should stay with a person because a mistake there would cost a relationship.

Hire, contract or borrow

A full-time hire makes sense once there is a steady backlog of systems to build and maintain. Before that, the work is a series of projects, and a specialist who builds and hands over is often a better fit, provided the result is documented well enough for your own team to run.
