What is an AI agent in sales and marketing operations?
Agent or automation
An automation is a fixed recipe: when a form is filled, enrich the record, assign an owner, send an email. An agent is given a goal and tools, and chooses the steps: look the company up, find the relevant person, read recent news, write a summary. Agents handle variety better. Automations are easier to predict and audit.
Where agents work well
Tasks with many inputs and a clear output that a person checks: account research, meeting preparation, filling gaps in records, drafting a first message from real facts, summarizing a call into the CRM. The common thread is work that is tedious for people and cheap to review.
Where to be careful
Anything that is sent to a customer, changes a deal, or deletes data. An agent that misreads a situation can send a wrong message or overwrite a correct field at scale. Start with a person approving each action, record what the agent did and why, and widen its freedom only where its work has held up.
How to start
Pick one task that takes your team hours every week and has an output someone already reviews. Build the agent inside the tools the team already uses, measure the time saved and the error rate, and keep the human review until the numbers justify removing it.
